摘要： To address the vast multimedia traffic volume and requirements of user quality of experience in the next-generation mobile communication system (5G), it is imperative to develop efficient content caching strategy at mobile network edges, which is deemed as a key technique for 5G. Recent advances in edge/cloud computing and machine learning facilitate efficient content caching for 5G, where mobile edge computing can be exploited to reduce service latency by equipping computation and storage capacity at the edge network. In this paper, we propose a proactive caching mechanism named learning-based cooperative caching (LECC) strategy based on mobile edge computing architecture to reduce transmission cost while improving user quality of experience for future mobile networks. In LECC, we exploit a transfer learning-based approach for estimating content popularity and then formulate the proactive caching optimization model. As the optimization problem is NP-hard, we resort to a greedy algorithm for solving the cache content placement problem. Performance evaluation reveals that LECC can apparently improve content cache hit rate and decrease content delivery latency and transmission cost in comparison with known existing caching strategies.

摘要： This paper considers the minimization of the offloading delay for non-orthogonal multiple access assisted mobile edge computing (NOMA-MEC). By transforming the delay minimization problem into a form of fractional programming, two iterative algorithms based on Dinkelbach's method and Newton's method are proposed. The optimality of both methods is proved and their convergence is compared. Furthermore, criteria for choosing between three possible modes, namely orthogonal multiple access (OMA), pure NOMA, and hybrid NOMA, for MEC offloading are established. 摘要： This paper considers non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) assisted mobile edge computing (MEC), where the power and time allocation is jointly optimized to reduce the energy consumption of offloading. Closed-form expressions for the optimal power and time allocation solutions are obtained and used to establish the conditions for determining whether conventional orthogonal multiple access (OMA), pure NOMA or hybrid NOMA should be used for MEC offloading. 摘要： As mobile devices have become the preferred tool for communication, work, and entertainment, traffic at the edge of the network is growing more rapidly than ever. To improve user experience, commodity servers are deployed in the edge to form a decentralized network of mini datacenters each serving a localized region. A challenge is how to place these servers geographically to maximize the offloading benefit and be close to the users they respectively serve. We introduce a formulation for this problem to serve applications that involve pairwise communication between mobile devices at different geolocations. 摘要： Although mobile edge computing (MEC), as an extension of the cloud computing paradigm to edge networks, overcomes some obstacles of traditional mobile cloud computing, i.e., the reduced response time particularly, it is a nontrivial task to efficiently deploy virtual machine replica copies (VRCs) supporting multiple applications among numerous MEC servers in edge networks. To combat this issue, we are motivated to investigate in detail the optimal placement of VRCs to minimize the average response time (MART) in the MEC architecture with various requests demand among multiple applications and capacity constraints of MEC servers in edge networks. Besides optimal enumeration placement algorithm (OEPA) as benchmark, we design latency aware heuristic placement algorithm (LAHPA) with much lower computation complexity than that of OEPA. To enhance the performance of LAHPA on MART, clustering enhanced heuristic placement algorithm (CEHPA) is proposed, focusing on the optimal VRC placement in each cluster. We also develop substitution enhanced heuristic placement algorithm (SEHPA) to avoid falling into local optimal solutions. As corroborated by extensive simulation results, the performance of SEHPA on MART is very close to that of OEPA compared with LAHPA and CEHPA. Note that. CEHPA also outperforms LAHPA, and both are better than a general greedy placement algorithm. Furthermore, we evaluate the normalized total cost for services provision in edge networks, where SEHPA can also get more outstanding results than other algorithms.

摘要： Due to the recent developments in mobile network technology and the supply of mobile devices, services that require high computing power and fast access speed, such as machine learning and multimedia streaming, are attracting attention. Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) has emerged. MEC allows servers to be located close to users to efficiently handle these services and provides users with ultra-low latency content delivery and powerful computing services. However, there has been a lack of research into the architecture required to efficiently use the computing power and resources of MEC. So, this paper proposes hierarchical MEC architecture in which MEC servers (MECS) are arranged in a hierarchical scheme to provide users with rapid content delivery, high computing performance, and efficient use of server resources.

摘要： Dedicated device-based and app-based augmented reality (AR) solutions have inherent limitations regarding cross-platform, pervasive AR application provisioning. Web-based AR (web AR), a promising lightweight and cross-platform approach to AR, is gaining increasing attention owing to its extensive application areas. However, for computationally intensive AR applications, the weak computational efficiency of current web browsers seriously hampers applications of web AR on a large scale. The "browser + cloud" approach suffers from the high-latency dilemma. Now, with the emerging 5G networks, mobile edge computing (MEC) promises to greatly reduce network latency (even to 1 ms) by deploying applications at the network edge closer to users, which provides an opportunity for performance improvement of web AR. In this article, the authors envision that the application of MEC has the potential to bring web AR into a new era. Specifically, an MEC-oriented web AR solution is first proposed, followed by the design and deployment details. The authors also discuss future directions aimed at using MEC to tackle the performance issues of web AR in 3G, 4G, and 5G networks.

摘要： Virtual reality (VR) over wireless is emerging as an important use case of 5G networks. Immersive VR experience requires the delivery of huge data at ultra-low latency, thus demanding ultra-high transmission rate. This challenge can be largely addressed by the recent network architecture known as mobile edge computing (MEC), which enables caching and computing capabilities at the edge of wireless networks. This paper presents a novel MEC-based mobile VR delivery framework that is able to cache parts of the field of views (FOVs) in advance and run certain post-processing procedures at the mobile VR device. To optimize resource allocation at the mobile VR device, we formulate a joint caching and computing decision problem to minimize the average required transmission rate while meeting a given latency constraint. When FOVs are homogeneous, we obtain a closed-form expression for the optimal joint policy which reveals interesting communications-caching-computing tradeoffs. When FOVs are heterogeneous, we obtain a local optima of the problem by transforming it into a linearly constrained indefinite quadratic problem then applying concave convex procedure. Numerical results demonstrate great promises of the proposed mobile VR delivery framework in saving communication bandwidth while meeting low latency requirement. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. 摘要： Mobile edge computing is proposed as a promising computing paradigm to relieve the excessive burden of data centers and mobile networks, which is induced by the rapid growth of Internet of Things (IoT). This work introduces the cloud-assisted multi-cloudlet framework to provision scalable services in cloudlet-based mobile edge computing. Due to the constrained computation resources of cloudlets and limited communication resources of wireless access points (APs), IoT sensors with identical computation offloading decisions interact with each other. To optimize the processing delay and energy consumption of computation tasks, theoretic analysis of the computation offloading decision problem of IoT sensors is presented in this paper. In more detail, the computation offloading decision problem of IoT sensors is formulated as a computation offloading game and the condition of Nash equilibrium is derived by introducing the tool of a potential game. By exploiting the finite improvement property of the game, the Computation Offloading Decision (COD) algorithm is designed to provide decentralized computation offloading strategies for IoT sensors. Simulation results demonstrate that the COD algorithm can significantly reduce the system cost compared with the random-selection algorithm and the cloud-first algorithm. 摘要： with the rapid development of mobile intemet and Internet of Things applications, the conventional centralized cloud computing is encountering severe challenges, such as high latency, low Spectral Efficiency （SE）, and nonadaptive machine type of communication. Motivated to solve these challenges, a new technology is driving a trend that shifts the function of centralized cloud computing to edge devices of networks. Several edge computing technologies originating from different backgrounds to decrease latency, improve SE, and support the massive machine type of communication have been emerging. This paper comprehensively presents a tutorial on three typical edge computing technologies, namely mobile edge computing, cloudlets, and fog computing. In particular, the standardization efforts, principles, architectures, and applications of these three technologies are summarized and compared. From the viewpoint of radio access network, the differences between mobile edge computing and fog computing are highlighted, and the characteristics of fog computing-based radio access network are discussed. Finally, open issues and future research directions are identified as well.
